Amit Itkin started at MnTAP as an intern over the summer of 2019, recommending low-cost methods for wastewater treatment facilities to reduce their nutrient effluent. The internship targeted the phosphorus and nitrogen concentration in discharges. When unchecked, these nutrients can lead to algal blooms that pollute local water bodies and damage the ecosystems. He continued working on the project throughout the year, and is now a full time staff member at MnTAP. Amit is continuing to work on the nutrient reduction project, and will apply what he has learned to help analyze trends in wastewater treatment efficiency. This will allow him to find more opportunities to prevent nutrient pollution that do not put a financial strain on wastewater treatment facilities. Amit hopes his work on wastewater optimization will contribute to a cleaner water ecosystem throughout Minnesota.
