Areas of Assistance

  • Publicly Owned Wastewater Treatment Facilities
  • Dry Cleaners

After a decade of pollution prevention success with the dry cleaning industry, Cindy McComas now focuses on working with publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities. However, she still continues to address dry cleaning industry questions. She holds master's degrees in civil engineering and environmental science.

When working with wastewater treatment facilities, Cindy identifies high phosphorus levels, organic waste levels, and overall wastewater output as concerns that need to be addressed. Cindy says that many rural wastewater treatment systems are dealing with high volumes of industrial discharge that they cannot adequately treat.

As MnTAP's director, Cindy has resource networks available to her that include the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, OSHA, National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR), trade associations, and industry specialists at MnTAP. Cindy refers businesses to government financial assistance programs when undertaking pollution prevention projects.

For the future, Cindy is focused on keeping MnTAP ahead of the curve. She says that MnTAP is working to anticipate businesses' needs so that staff members are in better positions to respond.

Good Questions to Ask Cindy

  • How can our community expand the capacity of our wastewater treatment plant to allow for economic growth?
  • Can you help us reduce a particular pollutant such as phosphorus, molybdenum, BOD, TSS, etc.?
  • Do you have information available that can help us reduce industrial discharges to our wastewater treatment plant?
