Did you know the human body is more than 60% water and, your pet and other animal bodies are 80% water or more?  Clean water is life; it is critical for most all living organisms, from water lilies to walleye.  Yet, in an effort to keep highways, parking lots, sidewalks and streets clear of ice; groundwater, lakes, rivers and streams are becoming highly polluted by chlorides from the salt we use.

According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, a teaspoon of salt will contaminate five gallons of water.  In the Twin Cities metro area an estimated almost 400,000 TONS of salt is used annually; this includes salt used by businesses and homeowners.  Currently, there are 21 lakes, 22 streams, and 4 wetlands in Minnesota that have unacceptable levels of chloride; by 2050 aquatic life in these and other water bodies could be wiped out.

We can improve water quality and save money with improved chloride/salt management.  You're invited to a late afternoon of enjoying "happy" water and learning about best management practices for road salt.  Please join us!
