Alternative dry cleaning systems

Traditional dry cleaning systems use perchloro-ethylene (perc) during the dry cleaning process. Employee exposure to perc should be carefully monitored, as perc is a suspected carcinogen that has been associated with dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, and eye irritation. Over-exposure may cause central nervous system and liver disorders. Perc is listed as a hazardous air pollutant under the federal Clean Air Act.
Many dry cleaners use alternative cleaning systems to meet customer needs, minimize health and safety impacts for employees, and to protect the environment.

  • Aqueous (wet) cleaning: water and detergents are used. A computer controls temperature and agitation for washing and drying machines
  • GreenEarth: a liquid silicone compound (methyl siloxane) is used as the cleaning solvent. Its low surface tension allows for quick wetting of fibers, and its density—close to water's—helps remove insoluble soils along with proper mechanical action.
  • Hydrocarbon: a petroleum based solvent with a flash point above 140oF that provides safe, effective, odorless cleaning.

MnTAP maintains the following list of dry cleaners using alternative dry cleaning systems solely as a service to Minnesota companies and citizens. This is not a complete list of cleaners and does not represent an endorsement by MnTAP. MnTAP, by providing the list, does not guarantee that the products or services do or do not comply with environmental and safety laws in any specific application.
