Best Practices
MEI’s project identified a number of resources shop owners and collision repair professionals can consult regarding best practices for emission reduction.

Design for the Environment Best Practices Toolkit
The U.S EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) Program has developed a comprehensive toolkit for use in the collision repair industry that assists individual shops with increasing awareness of the health and environmental concerns associated with refinishing activities and identifying and encouraging the use of safer, cleaner, more efficient practices and technologies.

CCAR-GreenLink® Virtual Shops
The Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair’s
(CCAR's) virtual collision repair shop, virtual paint mixing room, and virtual spray booth demonstrate the essential features of auto body refinishing operations in full compliance.

Additional resources

Collision Repair Campaign
U.S. EPA’s Collision Repair Campaign aims to drastically reduce auto body emissions at the national level.

Park Nicollet Institute’s Minnesota Collision Auto Repair Safety Study (MN-CARSS) This safety study is being conducted through Park Nicollet Institute by Dr. David Parker with assistance from Anca Bejan and is funded through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The team is investigating worker health and safety techniques with an aim to improve local performance and protect local employees. Choosing the Right Gloves provicesr tips on how to find the right gloves for the chemicals you’re working with.

Gun Wash Unit Cost Calculator The Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC) has developed this calculator to help collision repair shops calculate savings and payback associated with using automatic gun wash units in place of manual wash stations.

HVLP Cost Calculator The Iowa Waste Reduction Center has developed this calculator to help collision repair shops project the advantages of high volume/low pressure (HVLP) spray guns coupled with a targeting device and specialized training, over conventional spray guns.

Solvent Distillation Cost Calculator The Iowa Waste Reduction Center has developed this calculator to help collision repair shops calculate the cost savings and payback period associated with using a solvent distillation unit to recycle used paint thinner.

Collision Repair: Reducing Waste and Costs Cutting the amount of waste generated at your collision repair facility can help you comply with regulations and save money. This fact sheet highlights changes in materials and practices that can help reduce waste at your facility.

Spray Painting and Coating Waste Reduction Alternatives This MnTAP fact sheet goes in depth on many waste reduction opportunities for painting and coating process, from product design through manufacturing, coating and cleaning.
