Research
The following links will lead you to current U of MN research projects related to the ethanol process.
G. David Tilman, Dept. of Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior. Research interests include the ecological effects of human domination of the earth, including effects on ecosystem services of value to society; the ecological mechanisms controlling speciation, community assembly, species invasions and the evolution and maintenance of biodiversity; population ecology and theory of community dynamics and biodiversity; role of resource competition; biodiversity and ecosystem functioning; and effects of habitat destruction.
David B. Kittelson, Center for Diesel Research, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Center specializes in the physical and chemical characterization of exhaust emissions, evaluation of emission controls, evaluation and demonstration of alternative fuels, certification of on- and off-highway engines, and the evaluation of control technology in the field. Additional work includes: Driveability study, E20 report
Professor Roger Ruan, Co-director of the Center for Biorefining which is affiliated with the U of MN Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Environment. Together they conduct exploratory fundamental and applied research; provide education on bioenergy, biochemicals, and biomaterials; stimulate collaboration among the University researchers, other public sector investigators, and private investigators involved in biobased production technology development; promote technology transfer to industries; and foster economic development in rural areas.
Douglas Tiffany, Research Fellow, Department of Applied Economics, and R. Vance Morrey, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, are working on a project which focuses on evaluating alternatives for using biomass fuels to generate electricity and process heat at ethanol plants. More information can be found on their web site.
