A
Absorbents
Floor Cleanup Lower floor wash water volume and contamination at your auto repair shop to minimize the impact of wastewater regulations, reduce liabilities, protect the environment and community, and save your shop time and money.

Managing Towels, Wipes and Sorbents This fact sheet outlines management options for sorbents, towels and wipes.

Acetone
Reducing Volatile Emissions in the Fiber Reinforced Plastics Industry Most FRP processing facilities are major sources of volatile emissions. Their emissions include styrene, the volatile component of polyester resin and gelcoat; and acetone, a solvent used to clean tools and other surfaces contaminated with resin. This fact sheet discusses opportunities for reducing these emissions.

Adhesives
American Converters Eliminates Methylene Chloride Based Adhesives With the help of a MnTAP intern, American Converters switched to a waterbased adhesive, saving 32,000 pounds of air emissions and $40,000 annually in compliance costs.

Crystal Cabinet Works Eliminates Methylene Chloride Based Adhesives Switching to a waterbased adhesive reduced Crystal Cabinet Works' reportable toxic chemical emissions, helped the company avoid OSHA's methylene chloride standard and stay in compliance with EPA's NESHAP for the wood furniture industry.

Aerosols
Managing Waste Aerosols This fact sheet discusses aerosol can management requirements for businesses.

Refillable Spray Bottles Think about where you use aerosols. Can you buy bulk at substantial cost savings and apply liquids with refillable and reusable aerosols?

Air Bags
Disposal of Air Bags in Scrap Vehicles Most new vehicles come equipped with air bags. Because of safety and environmental issues, consideration must be given to the air bag system components when disposing of an air bag equipped vehicle. This fact sheet discusses why air bags should be deployed or removed before scrapping a vehicle, how to identify vehicles with air bags, how to deploy air bags and general information about how air bags function.

Air Conditioning
Appliance Servicing Refrigerants must be captured and not knowingly released into the atmosphere. Learn more about appliance servicing requirements, technician certification and who to call for help.

Motor Vehicle Air Conditioner Disposal Air conditioning units in motor vehicles that contain refrigerants must be removed prior to disposal of the unit. Learn more about recycling versus reclamation, recovering refrigerant and who to call for help.

Motor Vehicle Air Conditioner Servicing Refrigerants must be captured and not knowingly released into the atmosphere. Learn more about equipment, technician certification, refrigerant leaks, managing refrigerants, record keeping, certification forms and who to call for help.

Ozone Depletion Learn about the science of ozone depletion and the regulatory approach to protecting the ozone layer and find information about alternatives to ozone-depleting substances.

Air Emissions
Air Emissions Registration Permits Air emissions registration permits greatly simplify the permit application process for facilities. This MPCA fact sheet explains registration permits and who is eligible for them.

Air Publications Access the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's air publications online.

Air Quality Requirements for Automotive Repair Shops We just do mechanical repair, are there air requirements for us?

Air Quality Rules Affecting Shops with Paint Spray Equipment I operate a body shop, what about air regulations for me?

Emissions from Composites Manufacturing Operations Includes technical support guides and information on open molding emissions factors.

Printech Archive: Flexographic—Specific Discussion Explore information about inks, plates, solvents, air emissions calculations, permitting and other topics.

Printech Archive: Screen Printing—Specific Discussion Explore information about inks, screen cleaning, air emissions calculations and permitting.

Screenprinters and Environmental Questions An introduction to regulatory information and requirements for screenprinters in Minnesota.

Air Pollutants
Air Quality Permit Rules Understand if you need an air permit with this MPCA fact sheet. It provides lists of source categories subject to New Source Performance Standards and lists hazardous air pollutants.

Amalgam
Dental Office Hazardous Waste Dental clinics produce few hazardous wastes, and most of these are recyclable. This fact sheet outlines hazardous wastes generated by dental clinics and discusses reduction, management and disposal options.

Antifreeze
Antifreeze Special rules apply to waste antifreeze, and precautions must be taken to ensure its proper management. Some shops have solved this problem by purchasing their own recycling equipment or by using a service to recycle antifreeze.

Antifreeze Recycling Sewering may be an option for you. But why drain away a reusable and possibly profitable material?

Managing Waste Antifreeze This fact sheet discusses properly managing and recycling antifreeze removed from motors and vehicles.

Managing Wastes from Radiator Repair Shops Learn about recycling, management and disposal options for radiator repair shop wastes including antifreeze, paint, solvents and sorbents.

Aqueous Cleaners
Aqueous Alternatives for Cleaning Measurement Instrumentation Rosemount Aerospace Inc. is a large manufacturer of air data instrumentation used on both commercial and military aircraft. This MnTAP intern project tested aqueous alternatives to the chlorinated solvent used for cleaning two key instrument components.

Aqueous Cleaning Equipment Manufacturers Aqueous cleaning equipment suppliers offer a wide range of cleaning equipment and related accessories.

Aqueous Parts Washers for Small Operations Because aqueous parts washers use waterbased chemistries, they can be less hazardous to operate than petroleum solvent parts washers. This fact sheet describes the options available and has a list of suppliers.

Emulsified Oil and Water Separating Products Aqueous cleaning solutions can be contaminated by the build-up of emulsified waste oil. This oil can decrease the solution's cleaning capability. Separating oil from the water is an effective technique for extending the usefulness of process fluid or in pre-treating the wastewater prior to sewering. MnTAP maintains this list of products for separating emulsified oil and water solely as a service to Minnesota companies.

Asbestos
Asbestos Asbestos is well recognized as a health hazard as is highly regulated. Heaviest exposure to asbestos occurs in the construction industry, particularly during the removal of asbestos during renovation or demolition.

Aqueous Brake Washers Aqueous brake washing units use water based cleaning solutions. These solutions are nonflammable and contain little or no volatile organic compounds. Aqueous brake washing units are widely available, perform as well as solvent-based equipment and offer many other advantages.

Controlling Brake Dust to Protect Your Health Some brake dust can be seen when a brake drum is removed from a vehicle and many very small dust particles that can't be seen are also released. These particles may be asbestos. Use these methods to control the brake dust in your shop.

Autobody Waste
Autobody Repair and Refinishing Workers in autobody shops are potentially exposed to a variety of chemical and physical hazards.

Collision Repair: Reducing Waste and Costs Cutting the amount of waste generated at your collision repair facility can help you comply with regulations and save money. This fact sheet highlights changes in materials and practices that can help reduce waste at your facility.
